Orpheus Payne

With a tongue that's about as sharp as their scythe, Orpheus takes no prisoners - in conversation or in combat. Their acerbic nature and frankly bizarre headspace might leave you either scratching your head in confusion, or backing away in terror. All that said, there's a surprisingly introspective soul behind their front of sass and contrariness - and if you earn their respect, their loyalty is second to none. Ask nicely, and they might even play you a song.

personality

  • Orpheus doesn't mince words and won't hesitate to tell you how they feel or what the deal is whether it's appropriate or not (and they also don't apologize often.) They often come off as tactless and brutally honest.

  • They have kind of a nasty temper and are prone to outbursts when particularly agitated.

  • They don't have a lot of patience with social interaction and typical social cues in general. As they'd put it, they'd rather people say what they mean rather than walk around tripping over each other's dicks in an effort to be polite.

  • Orpheus is extremely cynical and has a rather bleak outlook on life. They typically assume the worst of a person or a situation and as a result may tackle things with much more force than is strictly needed. To them, if they always expect the worst, they'll be pleasantly surprised if the outcome is a good one, and not disappointed if the outcome is a bad one.

  • They're a habitual troll and will say or do things for the sole purpose of getting a reaction, or because they thought it'd be funny. Sometimes, it's because they simply wanted to see what would happen.

  • Their thought processes are the equivalent of throwing a bunch of instruments down the stairs. Where'd they come from? Where'd they go? Orpheus sure as shit doesn't know. Some of the things they say or do will make sense only to them, and they don't often bother to translate.

quirks & notable details

  • They have a somewhat flat affect 90% of the time and tend not to emote very much, or often (and when they do, it's extremely brief - flashes of grins, small smiles, ect). They're certainly emotional, but they tend to express themselves in words and actions rather than facial expressions.

  • While not a bard, they're surprisingly gifted with music. Plays the flute in their free time, and are usually at their best when listening to or talking about music. They'll very rarely offer to play outright, but they enjoy playing for others when asked.

  • They have a bit of a fascination with weird shit. Anything macabre, unexplainable by normal means, or just plain cursed will catch their attention. And appreciation.

  • Orpheus rarely sits correctly, unless they're required to be professional. Any other time, they will either squat, kneel, lean, or crouch on a surface of their choice.

  • They lost an arm at some point. Yes, this means they will make the occasional morbid amputee joke at their own expense. I'm sorry in advance.

  • They're rather particular about being touched. They'll accept it as long as it's from people they're at least familiar with, and will tolerate it to an extent to strangers. Even so, they're not overly verbal about it and will just try to subtly end the contact as soon as possible. Around people they consider close (aka, "safe"), they're actually quite physically affectionate.

  • Everyone gets a nickname. It's a compulsion of theirs and they will call you by that nickname. With that said, they put a lot of thought and planning into their nicknames. They're just using a set of criteria and methodology that only they know and can make sense of.

  • They have a soft spot for children. It's oddly easy for them to relate to and interact with them, sometimes moreso than other adults.

  • Failure has always been difficult for them to accept. They've been handling it "better" since leaving the Castrum - if hiding their discomfort with booze, drugs, and fighting counts.

  • Will admit to being a heavy user of various substances.

  • If there is alcohol nearby, they will have some. If there's mixed drinks with weird side effects available, they will try them - doesn't matter what it is as long as it fucks them up.

  • They're a little addicted to fighting, specifically competitions/cage matches or even random brawls. They look for the biggest, the baddest, and by extension the most deadly opponents. In the twisted recesses of their little mind, they're having the most fun when their life is potentially on the line.

special abilities

Aether synesthesia & manipulation via sound

  • Hears/percieves aether as a series of sounds. This in turn allows them to use sound itself as a method of casting spells/manipulating aether.

  • Has a mechanical earpiece that functions as a “focus” of sorts, allowing them to more easily tune out the aether they constantly “hear” to avoid becoming overwhelmed

  • Associates specific aetheric frequencies and polarities with music/musical notes and patterns due to taking up the study of music at a young age.

  • They draw upon mainly personal aether to cast their spells, but will also draw upon environmental aether if necessary. Typically uses wind or lightning-aspected spells.

  • By producing some sort of sound (such as humming a short tune, whistling sharply, playing something on an instrument, clicking their tongue, ect), they’re able to perform certain abilities or induce effects.

  • Can mimic sounds that they’ve heard and also make those sounds come from people or objects.

  • Quite often uses wind magic to give them an aerial boost or to knock down/disorient their opponent, usually in the form of a sharp or soft whistle.

  • Lightning is typically a “blunt” sound, like the click of a tongue or a stomp. Used to stun.

The Echo

  • Limited combat clairvoyance

  • Understanding of languages

Hypertuned

  • Increased speed, strength, durability, and agility

  • Healing factor - most injuries will heal completely within a couple of days or less

rp hooks

bounty hunter
They primarily work out of Ul'dah, primarily specializing in the more...difficult and dangerous targets. That isn't to say they won't take any job that comes their way, so long as it's paying.
musician
Despite their occasional habit of acting like brainless muscle, Orpheus is musically gifted and actively enjoys talking discussing it with others. They're somewhat shy about it though and will rarely just bring it up to anyone - unless you happen to be a musician, yourself. Or, if you happen to catch them playing their flute in a tree one day. If you're a street performer, chances are they've stuck around hidden to listen to you play for awhile.
garleans
They're a Castrum escapee, and a dangerous one at that. They know they're being hunted and become very apprehensive if they're aware someone from the Empire may be present. They'll also be more evasive/rude if forced to communicate with them.
magitek + garlean tech
They're no full blown engineer, but they do know how the technology works and can tinker with/repair things (such as their arm). They're also quite familiar with the inner workings of most Garlean weapons and vehicles. If your character's got a fancy magitek weapon, chances are they'll notice and will be quietly nerding out.
fight clubs
Orpheus likes a good fight and will participate readily if they're in the mood. You'll find them at "fight club" themed venues occasionally, typically sequestered in a corner making silent observations/criticisms. If they're in the ring, expect some crass comments and occasional dirty fighting techniques. There's no honor here - if it helps them win, they'll go for it.
